News Investigators/ The Controller of Correctional Centre, Zamfara Command, Murtala Muhammad has called for speedy dispensation of justice to decongest custodial centres in the state.
This is contained in a statement by ASC Mustapha Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Zamfara Command on Saturday.
He said the controller made the appeal during a visit to the Zamfara Chief Judge, Justice Kulu Aliyu in Gusau.
Muhammad sought for regular visit by magistrates and judges to correctional facilities as provided by law.
He highlighted the use of non custodial measures and the need for the judges to embrace same for speedy trial of cases in the state.
The controller observed that effective collaboration between the two institutions would strengthen administration of criminal justice in the state.
Responding, the chief judge, commended the Nigerian Correctional Service for its commitment to inmates reforms and rehabilitation.
Aliyu assured the controller of the judiciary’s continuous support in ensuring speedy delivery of justice with fairness to all parties.
“We are working with relevant stakeholders including the office of the Solicitor General of the state, the police among others, towards decongesting the custodial centers through speedy trials and the use of non custodial measures,” she said.
She, however, cited insecurity as one of the factors delaying the jail delivery process in the state.
Aliyu announced that a workshop had been scheduled for December for the High Court Judges, Correctional Service staff and other relevant stakeholders on the use of Non Custodial measures for quick dispensation of justice.
She commended Muhammad for the visit, noting that it would further strengthen the relationship between the Zamfara Judiciary and the Correctional Service towards achieving a more efficient justice delivery system.
