China, Nigeria To Host Wushu Championship Cup, Deepen Sports Ties

News Investigators/ The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), has announced plans to host the 2025 Chinese Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship, also known as the China–Nigeria Friendship Cup.

The Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing, said that the event was a platform to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between both nations.

“Chinese people really love Wushu and martial arts, and we are very happy to know that so many Nigerian friends also love Wushu. The purpose of this event is to bring athletes and lovers of Chinese martial arts together to enjoy the beauty and spirit of Wushu culture,” he said.

Mr Yang explained that Wushu, which represents the modern form of traditional Chinese martial arts, promotes discipline, respect, and inner peace that align with Nigeria’s youth development goals.

“In Chinese culture, Wushu is a way for self-defence and self-discipline. Strong people have the responsibility to help the weak. That is the real spirit of Wushu,” he added.

The Director recalled that the first edition of the Wushu tournament was held seven years ago and was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the revival of the event demonstrates both countries’ commitment to cultural exchange and long-term cooperation.

“We hope this will not just be a one-time event but an annual celebration of friendship and mutual understanding,” he said.

In his remarks, Bukola Olopade, NSC Director-General, commended the Chinese Embassy for supporting the development of Wushu in Nigeria.

“This partnership reflects our shared vision for youth empowerment and cultural exchange between Nigeria and China,” he said.

Mr Olopade said the competition would also provide opportunities for young people to learn the values of focus, hard work, and respect through sports.

Mr Sesan Adeboyejo, North Central Zonal Representative of the Nigeria Wushu Kung Fu Federation, said athletes from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT would compete in six divisions, including Taiji, Sanshou (Sanda), Team Forms, and Creative Forms.

“Wushu is a sport that teaches respect, integrity, perseverance, and indomitable spirit; values we need to build the future leaders of tomorrow,” Adeboyejo said.

He said that winners of the tournament would receive cash prizes of ₦500,000, ₦300,000, and ₦200,000 for first, second, and third places respectively, with additional consolation prizes for effort and perseverance.

He added that registration for the event is free, and the Chinese Embassy would provide accommodation and feeding for all participating athletes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2025 Chinese Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship is scheduled to take place from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
