A staff of the University of Benin identified as Prince Carter Oshodin, on Friday, committed suicide because of the unbearable hardship.

It was gathered that Oshodin, a resident at Umelu Community in Upper Sakponba hanged himself as a result his tough financial situation.

Oshodin, a data entry staff of the institution had not been paid for months as a result of the lingering industrial action by the Academic Union of Universities.

Although the Non Academic Staff Union which Oshodin belong to has called off its strike recently, the members be not been paid their salaries due to the Federal Government’s no work to pay rule.

It was gathered that the deceased was seen pleading without success with neighbors for financial assistance on Thursday the day before the sad occurrence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed it.

He said that while the matter was not reported, the Divisional Police Officer went to the community where it was confirmed to him.

He said that the community members had taken the corpse away.

The late Oshidin reflected the image of a loving father who couldn’t resist the sight of his children going hungry.

He had said in a post in 2017 that the issue of non payment of salaries was affecting him badly as he couldn’t withstand the sight of his children going hungry.
