Anambra State Government on Tuesday continued the demolition of illegal structures and shanties at Fegge, Onitsha, in spite of the sit-at-home order being observed by residents of the state.
The taskforce team arrived Akunnia Njote waterways at Fegge some minutes past 11.am and continued the demolition of structures built on waterways.
It was observed that some residents around the area built on waterways which over time diverted flood to wrong channels, destroying people’s properties and risking lives.
Reacting on the exercise, a member of the community, Mr Louis Mbanefo, expressed satisfaction over Government efforts to tackle the issue that have resulted in environmental degradation.
He urged the State Government not to relent in the war against flooding adding that the target of urban renewal of the state would be achieved despite the obstacles being confronted.
Meanwhile business activities remained shut as markets, banks, schools, courts, roads, offices, among others were deserted.
The ever-busy Onitsha end of the Niger Bridge, Onitsha/Owerri road, notorious Upper Iweka axis, Ogbonmanu junction and Nnewi triangle were all deserted.
