•••Insists 10th Senate Must Discuss Future or Nigeria
By John Ugo, Awka
The Anambra Central Senatorial Candidate under the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Victor Umeh said on Tuesday that the mass movement and support of Nigerians for the former Govenror of Anambra State and Presidential candidate of the party, Mr. Peter Obi, is causing serious concern in political circles.
Umeh said the growing support for Obi is giving sleepless nights and indeed scare to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and others ahead of the 2023 elections.
This is as he declared that the 10th session of Senate of the National Assembly would discuss the future of the country in view of the myriads of challenges bedeviling the socio-political and economic framework of the country.
Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NIJ), Anambra State council, Umeh noted that Peter Obi as a model and brand represents the heart of millions of troubled citizens and is therefore m determined to salvage the nation’s ship from crashing into the rocks.
He said the party is working round the clock to get a Vice Presidential candidate who would support the views and mission of Mr. Peter Obi as candidate of the party.
Umeh faulted reports in the media that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has foreclosed the substitution of names of Vice Preaodential candidates.
He also pledged that his going to the red Chambers of the National Assembly is to continue to be a strong and loud voice for Ndigbo and to help in finding solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
According to him, “The APC, PDP and other political parties are afraid of Peter Obi because of his resolve to banish poverty and ability to manage resources.”
Umeh who was the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) disclosed that Obi left the PDP because of the grand plot and sabotage against the Igbo and the entire Southeast geo political zone in their quest for the Presidency of the country.
He added that the brazen act of denying the Southeast to produce the President by the two major parties of the APC and PDP was totally unacceptable and against the principle and letter of zoning arrangement between the north and south.
“I have been an Apostle of restructuring, it’s something I believe in. Remember I was at the National Conference in 2014 and I was one of the people who spoke very strongly to get Nigeria restructured so that Nigeria can function as a smooth country.
“The way we are presently we cannot achieve much under the present system. People have spoken against the constitution; the constitution was not made by the Nigerian people; this constitution is called Decree number 24 of 1998 and not a constituent assembly made constitution. That’s why we are having problems in Nigeria, people put together what they wished for themselves and handed it over to us in 1999 as the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria.”
“Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) has recently advocated for a new constitution and many groups have been asking for a new constitution, because the constitution we have is very difficult to amend; all amendment exercises have been frustrated. So, people are pushing for that, we believe and that’s why I said I want to be part of 10th Senate because the future of Nigeria will be discussed in that tenth Senate… Something must be done to Nigeria for it to truly become a united Nigeria,” he said.
He stressed that Peter Obi and his Labour Party backed by the support of millions of Nigerians are to address the bitter experience.
“If you look at the Presidential primaries of the APC and the PDP, the Igbo would have buried their heads in shame if not for Peter Obi and Labour Party.
“Nigerians of all shades of opinion are rallying around Peter Obi. Nigerians must show commitment and love. What is happening is divine, Obi is a hot brand.
“We are urging Nigerians to rally round Peter Obi; Peter Obi stands for good of Nigeria and the citizens. That hope Nigerians need is Peter Obi, even in the midst of plenty he cannot waste the resources. Obi’s movement is a revolution that will take Nigeria far. He is a role model.” Umeh stated.
On the continued detention of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, activities of the proscribed group and Insecurity in the Southeast, Umeh advocated that the Federal Government should adopt proper dialogue with IPOB to resolve the seeming conflict.
