17 KILLED, 4 INJURED IN A ROAD ACCIDENT IN ABUJA

A total of 17 passengers have died in an accident in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday. 

Four other passengers, all males, sustained injuries in the accident which occurred early on Tuesday along Kwali-Abaji axis of the Abuja-Lokoja Road. 

The Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps Mr Bisi Kazeem said in a statement on Tuesday, that a male passenger escaped unhurt. 

The FRSC Spokesman who attributed he accident to fatigue and over speeding said it involved involved a DAF Trailer with registration number BAU 632 XA and a Toyota Bus with registration number GME 201 ZU.

He said that the drivers drove all night without observing the necessary rest during the journey  

He said, “Unfortunately, there were a total of 22 occupants involved in the crash, out of which 17 victims all male were killed. 

“Four other occupants, also male victims who were rescued alive sustained various degrees of injuries, while the remaining 1 male occupant was rescued without any injury.

“As at the time of this statement, the emergency rescue team of the corps has concluded the rescue of the injured victims to Abaji General Hospital for immediate medical attention, while the remains of the dead victims were deposited at the mortuary.” He said 

Kazeem said the FRSC will increase its operational activities to curb the incidences of violations on the road.

He also urged the members of the public to use the Commission’s toll free lines 122 and the national traffic radio 107.1 FM to report emergencies.

Kazeem also quoted Dauda Biu, the Acting Corp Marshal of the FRSC as having advised drivers to desist from over speeding.

Biu said that investigations over the years have linked the cause of accidents  to excessive speeding or speed limits violations.

The FRSC Acting Corp Marshal also warned against night journeys and advised drivers to observe a 30-minutes period of rest after every four hours on the road.
