I43 DIE IN ROAD ACCIDENTS IN THREE MONTHS IN EDO, TWO OTHERS — FRSC

The Zone 5 of Federal Road Safety Corps, has said that 143 people were killed in road accidents in the three states of Edo, Delta and Anambra between January and March this year

The Commanding Officer in charge of Zone 5, Mr Ayodele Kumapayi, said that the figure represents an increase of 28.8 percent in comparison with the 111 people who died in accidents during the same period in the zone in 2021.

Kumapayi who put the figure of those involved in accidents at 1,456 in the period said that the figure also represents an increase of 3.40 percent when compared to the 1,407 of last year.

He stated further that the zone witnessed a decrease of 3.5 percent road accidents in the 193 accidents in the period under review as against the 200 of last year.

“ I must say that not less than143 lives were lost in various road traffic crashes (RTCs) across the zone between January and March this year.

“ Also between the same period, 489 people out of those involved in the RTCs were injured, whereas within the same period last year, 464 people were injured. This is a 5.30 per cent increase comparatively.

“However, there was a 3.50 per cent decrease in number of road accidents recorded in the zone within the period under review, as 193 RTCs were recorded against the 200 recorded within the same period last year.

“We also had a decrease in serious cases recorded as 79 serious cases were recorded against 122 recorded within the same period in the previous year, and this is a 35.20 per cent decrease.”

Kumapayi added that 64 of the accidents representing 38.7 percent increase were fatal when compared with 49 in the first quarter of last year.

He put minor cases of crashes at 29 which according to him was the same as the figure of last year.

.Kumapayi stated further that the FRSC arrested 13,474 traffic offenders for various traffic offenses in the first quarter as against the figure of 8,912 during the period last year.
