LP’s Emeruwa Emerges PDP Dominated Abia Assembly’s Speaker

By Kamsi Anayo

Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa of Labour Party (LP), representing Aba Central State Constituency on Wednesday emerged 8th Abia Assembly Speaker.

Emeruwa, a first timer in the House was nominated by Hon Ucheonye Stephen representing Aba South State Constituency.

However,  pandemonium broke out during the the process of election as Labour Party took both Speaker, Majority Leader in PDP dominated 8th Assembly.

It was learnt that PDP has 11 members while the Labour Party has 10 and the other parties have 3 members in the House.

This generated serious confusion as Labour Party which did not have the majority in the Assembly took the Speakership and majority leadership positions in a House dominated by the state PDP.

In the midst of the drama, Emeruwa was elected  the Speaker in the presence of the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

Emeruwa a former Executive Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area defected from the PDP to the Labour Party after losing the primaries.

He subsequently won the 2023 House of Assembly election for Aba Central State Constituency.

However, a bigger drama ensured when the Clerk of the House, Johnpedro Irokansi refused to accept nominations from PDP members for the position of speaker.

The PDP which has the majority of the members did not get the position of the majority Leader which is meant for the party with the highest number of lawmakers in the House.
