Gunmen Kill Another Police Officer In Anambra

A policeman attached to Atani Police station the Local Government Headquarters of Ogbaru Council Area of Anambra state has allegedly been shot dead by yet-to-be identified gunmen, while two others sustained various degrees of injures.

An eyewitness said that one of the police officers stationed at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Atani Ogbaru was gunned down by the gunmen around 4pm on March 4.

The police officer named Mr John Ukwa of the ASP rank was shot and killed instantly as the suspected gunmen attacked the police station.

The incident, according to eyewitnesses, occurred at between 4 and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The gunmen allegedly swooped on the policemen at a checkpoint close to Atani police station and opened fire on them.

The Network gathered that the gunmen operating in two vehicles they allegedly snatched from some victims opened fire at the  police checkpoint, killing one instantly while two others sustained injuries.

The Hoodlums allegedly zoomed off with the corpse and firearm of the deceased policeman.

Some gunmen had few months ago, attacked the Atani police station, and killed a female police officer and set the station ablaze.

It would be recalled that the Atani police station had  been attacked by unknown gunmen on two other occasions in which casualties were recorded.

The state police public relations officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga could not be reached on phone the calls to his mobile telephone line did not connect.

There are concerns that the killings targeting security officials in Anambra State have been reduced following a lull in the period leading up to the presidential elections and shortly after the announcement of the results of the said election.

Security operatives suspect the attacks are being carried out by Eastern Security Network (ESN).
