An editor with SUN Newspaper, Mr. Waheed Odusile has been elected National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Odusile, a veteran journalist, defeated five other presidential contenders, namely, Rotimi Obamuwagun, Dele Atunbi, Uzaka Seifa (USA), Mike Aladenika and Mustapha Lamidi to emerge winner in the election.

The election marked the highpoint of the 2-day NUJ conference which took place at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja.

Sixteen other officials were elected into the 17 elective positions of the Central Working Committee (CWC), the apex organ of the NUJ National Executive Committee (NEC).

Odusile, who has just been sworn-in as 16th President of the union alongside his executive elected at NUJ’s 5th National Triennial Delegates Conference in Abuja, promised to enforce payment of salary to journalists.

“I’m by this putting the media owners on notice, journalists must be paid their salary, go and tell them,” the new NUJ President warned.

Candidates numbering 29 contested for the various positions.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Fostering the Safety of Journalists and Building Synergy with Agents of the State.”
