Trump Did Call Africa ‘Shithole,’ Former White House Adviser Writes Buhari

By News Investigators – Former White House Adviser, Omarosa Manigault Newman on Monday confirmed to President Muhmmadu Buhari that U.S. President Donald Trump did describe African countries as ‘shithole’ at a meeting with senators on immigration last January.

Mrs. Manigault Newman who served as Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison in the White House until January 2018, was reacting to Mr. Buhari’s doubt on the validity of the media reports that his former boss made the vulgar remark about African countries.

In a tweet to the Nigerian President on Monday, Mrs. Manigault Newman who was said to be the closest black American to Mr. Trump wrote: “FYI he said it.”:

President FYI he said it. ????????

Jordan Fabian, a White House Correspondent with the Hill had asked Mr. Buhari at the joint news conference with the U.S. President: “Did you address his reported comments from earlier this year, when he reportedly used vulgar language to describe African nations?”

But the Nigerian President skirted the question, expressing doubt about the credibility of the U.S. media reports.

“Well, I’m very careful with what the press says about others than myself,” he said, adding: “I’m not sure about, you know, the validity or whether that allegation against the president was true or not. So the best thing for me is to keep quiet.”

Mr. Trump, did not deny that he made the statement but quickly interjected saying: “The (Nigerian) president knows me and he knows where I’m coming from. And you do have some countries that are in very bad shape and very tough places to live in.”

The African Union had condemned the comments, and Mr. Buhari is the first African leader to visit the White House since the assumption of office of the U.S. President.

The Nigerian President was among the first two African head of states to be called by Mr. Trump when he resumed at the White House.

Mr. Trump’s telephone call to Mr. Buhari was well celebrated by his supporters then who saw it as an image booster for the president at a time when he was battling an unknown ailment that kept him away in the London for months amid growing disenchantment back home.
