Tragedy: Flood Sweeps Away A Mother Of Five In Anambra

It was a tragic day in Anambra state, as flood washed away a mother of five children in Oko community, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state during a heavy rain.

According to an eyewitness, the victim went to a bank in the area to perform some transactions on June 7 when the incident occurred. 

The deceased, Mrs Onyinye Okafor, it was gathered had packed her motorcycle at a location and boarded a commercial tricycle to the bank, after which she boarded another tricycle to go back. 

However, the heavy flood on the road affected the movement of their tricycle, making the tricyclist missed the track and lost the control.

“Onyinyechi, having sensed danger, alighted from the tricycle in the pool of the flood in attempt to save herself but unfortunately  fell into a drainage channel and the flood washed her away.

“Some of her co-passengers and the tricyclist made efforts to rescue her, but to no avail, as the flood swept her off their hands.

“Many of those who attempted to rescue her also sustained various degrees of injuries due to the effect of the flood,” the eyewitness said.

The eyewitness said also that the flood dumped the victim’s corpse under a culvert of a big drainage system at the front gate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, where she was later found, after a hours of intensive search.

According to the eyewitness, the deceased who hailed from Etti in Nanka community, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state was rushed to a hospital where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

All efforts to get the confirmation of the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ikenga Tochukwu proved abortive, as he had yet to respond to the calls and text messages as at the time of this publication.
