News Investigators/ Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says the proposed Lagos Tenancy Bill aims to balance landlord-tenant interests and resolve housing disputes.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the Bill is currently before the State House of Assembly.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry, the governor said the bill was designed to “protect tenants and landlords alike” and promote a fair, transparent rental system across the state.
Mr Sanwo-Olu noted that the bill, developed in collaboration with the State House of Assembly, would modernise tenancy laws and resolve what he described as “naughty, naughty issues” between landlords and tenants.
“Everybody wants to be a landlord. But you must also have tenants who can survive and pay rent.
“The new law seeks a working partnership between both parties so that landlords earn income, and tenants live decently.”
He explained that the bill also aimed to reduce housing conflicts, streamline tenancy agreements, and ensure that property owners did not exploit tenants through unfair charges or evictions.
Mr Sanwo-Olu noted that the government’s housing policies, including rent-to-own and rent-to-live schemes, were already helping residents transition into home ownership, with plans to strengthen these schemes under the new legal framework.
“We are encouraging everyone to take advantage of the rent-to-own initiative
“The goal is to make housing affordable and sustainable for every Lagos residents,” the governor said.
The governor assured residents that the state’s housing reforms would continue to address affordability, accessibility, and equity, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to him, Lagos will keep partnering with the private sector and local communities to deliver modern, inclusive housing solutions.
“The tenancy bill is a continuation of that partnership, a system where the government, landlords, and tenants all win,” Sanwo-Olu said.
