Our Committee Not Criminal Or Civil Trial Body, Umahi Declares

YOLA/By Tom Garba – The The Presidential Committee on Herdsmen/Farmer conflict is not a criminal or civil trial body but an organ to bring lasting solution between the two neighbourhoods,’’ Committee chairman, Dave Umahi says.

Mr. Umahi who is also the governor of Ebonyi State told the people of Adamawa at its resumed sitting Wednesday that its mission was simply to ascertain the remote causes of the conflicts between herders and farmers and to proffer solutions.

The frequent herders/farmers clashes is generally attributed to the brazen invasion of farm crops by armed herders who in recent times have turned violent.

The Mr. Umahi committee, set up by the Federal Government on facts finding mission on the incessant conflict began its sitting in Yola, Adamawa, saying its mission is to identify the remote causes.

“We are here as part of facts the finding mission and to ascertain the remote cause of the crisis between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

“The committee is not a criminal or civil trial body but an organ to bring lasting solution between the two neighbourhoods,’’ the governor said.

In his remarks, Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa lauded the Federal Government for the establishment of the committee.

Bindow, who was represented by his deputy, Martins Babale, said his administration was committed to the protection of lives and property of the citizens.

“Government of Adamawa is committed to the protection of lives and property of its citizens.

“As part of its efforts to ensure peaceful coexistence among the people, the government has started massive integration and sensitisation campaign among people of the state,’’Babale said.
