News Investigators/ The Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the assault of one of its students at a privately-owned hostel outside the university premises.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the university disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.
The statement was signed by Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations.
Mrs Thomas-Onashile said the incident involved some students of the College of Medicine, Ikeja, and occurred at a privately-owned hostel outside the university premises.
She said the assaulted student promptly reported the matter to the police, adding that it had since been addressed through appropriate law enforcement authorities.
She, however, said the university management had initiated disciplinary processes against those involved, in line with its established rules and regulations.
“The university management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” she said.
Thomas-Onashile described assault, intimidation and harassment of students, staff or visitors, whether within or outside the university premises, as unacceptable.
According to her, such acts contravened the core values upon which the university was founded.
She reiterated that students were expected to be “worthy in character and learning”, in line with the institution’s mission of producing graduates who excel academically and morally.
Thomas-Onashile advised students to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid situations that could compromise their safety.
She also urged students to promptly report concerns to appropriate authorities whenever necessary.
She said LASU enjoined parents to support its mission by engaging constructively with the institution and respecting established institutional boundaries.
Thomas-Onashile urged parents to encourage their wards to uphold discipline and integrity.
“The university reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the well-being, safety and academic success of every student,” she said.
She said LASU would continue to provide a secure and conducive learning environment for students.
