The Headquarters of the Catholic Church in Owerri, Imo State capital, Assumpta Cathedral, has been gutted by fire.
The unfortunate incident which occurred in the late hours of Sunday destroyed many properties of the church.
A source disclosed that the fire which started at about past 11pm was as a result of an electrical fault from the electrical unit which is in the church.
The eyewitness revealed that the fire started with an explosion leading to sparkling of electrical wirings in the church.
People who were around when the incident happened were seen using water and other substances available to fight the fire pending the arrival of the state fire service.
The Director of communications of the archdiocese, Rev Fr Raymond Nzeremeogu, said although musical equipment and other appliances were said to have been destroyed, fire fighters had helped in putting out the fire completely.
As at the time of this report, the exact damages caused by the inferno has no been revealed as the church is yet to release an official statement on the incident.
