President Goodluck Jonathan has conceded defeat to his main opponent General Muhammadu Buhari, following the declaration of results in 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory which already put the All Progressive Congress’s candidate in clear lead in the last Saturday elections.

Jonathan has telephoned Buhari to concede defeat, congratulating him over his victory at the polls.

In 2011, Buhari had refused to congratulate Jonathan who then won the presidential election.

The spokesperson of the APC, Lai Mohammed, confirmed to reporters in Abuja that President Jonathan has called to congratulate Buhari for his victory at the poll.

Earlier, Jonathan had appeared on the BBC, where he affirmed his acceptance of the result of the  Presidential elections.

“The President called General Buhari at 5: 05 pm this evening to congratulate him for emerging victorious,” Mohammed told journalists.

The APC spokesman commended the President for accepting defeat, saying, “l commend the President for that singular act.”

Though, the President has conceded defeat, the final result of the elections is yet to be declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission who is still awaiting the results from Niger Borno state.
