President Goodluck Jonathan has announced the resignation of Mr. Bamanga Tukur as National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).

The announcement put paid to several denials to the contrary by the erstwhile party chairman who told journalists uptill the last minute that he was not leaving his position.

The president handed over Tukur’s resignation letter to the National Secretary of the party, Mr. Wale Oladipo, at the meeting of National Executive Committee of the party on Thursday in Abuja.

While commenting on the resignation, Jonathan said, “Tukur is not guilty of any offence and I am going to give him an assignment that is tougher than PDP chairman,” the president assured.

“We need a man like Tukur to promote the image of PDP and Nigeria abroad. Already, he has been doing good job to promote the image of Nigeria through the African RoundTable,” the president added.

Sources said the former chairman may soon be appointed as Nigeria Ambassador to China.

Jonathan also said the PDP will hold another NEC meeting next week Monday to announce a new chairman.  Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross-River moved the motion to accept Mr. Tukur’s resignation.

The motion was seconded by the Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, and was accepted by the NEC.

News of Tukur’s final exit as chairman of the ruling party was first made known on Wednesday by Newsinvestigators following the ratification of his resignation by the national caucus of the party and the consequent approval by the Board of Trustee.
