By Sadiq Umar – Two officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been killed in an attack carried out on Sunday by suspected Herdsmen in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attackers were said to have ambushed a convoy of NSCDC officers deplored to keep peace in the troubled area leading to exchange of gunfire.

It is not clear the number of casualties recorded on the side of the herdsmen, but NSCDC spokesperson, Emmanuel Okeh, confirmed the death of two of its men.

They were in a gun duel with the herders and, unfortunately, we lost two,” Mr. Okeh told PREMIUM TIMES by telephone Monday evening.

At least two officers were killed in the attack, which occurred on Monday, marking the first NSCDC casualties in herdsmen attacks.

The officers were deployed to the troubled area in the wake of the renewed herdsmen attack that killed over 70 villagers last month.

Violent conflicts between nomadic herdsmen from the north and farmers especially in north central states have escalated in recent times and are spreading southward, threatening the country’s security and stability.
