Gully Erosion threatens Anambra School

By Kamsi Anayo

Some classrooms Nnobi High School in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra state will be swallowed by a threatening gully erosion that has cut off the Nnobi-Nkpor road if urgent intervention is not made.

Our correspondent who visited the area said the gully is expanding by the day causing rapid downward movement of a mass of rock, earth and sloping towards the school.

Vehicular movements have been diverted to Alor community, a neighbouring town, some few kilometres away from the site of the gully

A stakeholder in the area, Sir Obiora Okpala has called for a declaration of a state of emergency on the road by authorities concerned.

He said,”The Nnobi -Nkpor road is finally cut off completely.

“After I made a video that went viral on the early hours of Sept. 2 which I’m sure got to the Governor, he visited the site on Wednesday 6th September and promised immediate Mobilisation of Works to the sight.

“As at yesterday Sept. 12 after series of downpour over the days the erosion  finally cut off the Road.

“My worries now is that about 16 feet to that road is one of the junior student’s classroom block of Nnobi High School. Any further devastation of the gully across the land will cut the classroom block into two.

“I call on those close to the governor to urge him to come and assist the good people of Nnobi.

“The road is a short cut to most commercial vehicles heading to parts of Abia and Akwa Ibom states from the commercial city of Onitsha and it is  the major gateway to semi urban city of Ekwulobia.

“It’s a multipurpose commercial route, and the road needs urgent Intervention.”
