Do Not Set Bayelsa on Fire, Former Speaker Warns INEC

A former Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly,  Tonye Isena, has asked INEC to follow the proper processes and procedures in the Bayelsa State governorship poll.

It warned the commission not to set the state on fire.

Some youths had laid siege to the INEC office in Yenagoa on Sunday, claiming the election did not hold in the Nembe Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

But giving the background to the development, Isena, who is the Deputy Director-General of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Central Senatorial District, noted that the party agents were chased away by the security agents, insisting that election did not hold in some parts of the state.

He admonished INEC to be above board, noting that the conduct of the election in some parts of the state fell below expectation and is unacceptable.

Isena stated, “The agents were chased out, in connivance with the security (agents) and I think INEC was culpable in this matter, that is what has happened. And what we are saying is that you cannot bring in results where there was no election, election is when two persons are contesting.

“Have you ever seen an election where no single person in a place is supporting one candidate? It’s unheard of. The truth is that INEC should do the right thing; for me, they should live above board, they have a name to protect.

“We are still crying about the Presidential (election) issue and we were expecting that in this off-season election, INEC is going to be above board and live up to their billing.

“Nigerians are tired of this type of desecrated elections. Let them do the right thing; to cut off the joy/voice of the people is wrong. When the people have taken a decision and then you’re now conniving with people; maybe perhaps because somebody has been compromised.”

Speaking further, the PDP chieftain said, “I am using this medium honestly to call on our South-South INEC representative, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu; you need to write your name in gold in the annals of history. History should reckon with you positively.

“I also call on the REC, he should be above board and do the right thing because whether they like it or not, if they don’t do the right thing they will forever  regret what they did to Bayelsans.”

Isena reeled out the various acts of brigandage that allegedly occurred during the election, adding that electoral materials were  hijacked.

He also alleged that votes were manipulated at some polling units, stressing that the electoral commission had disappointed Bayelsans.

Isena noted, “In several places even up to this morning, people are hijacking materials.  Is that an election we are doing or war? Other places we have done elections, results are coming out.

“You can imagine that everywhere we have done election the way it is supposed to be done, we are seeing the results coming out, papers are signed by both agents and the rest of them. You can see the mandate. How can you tell me that somebody will have 40, 000 votes and another will have 20 votes in this country?

“So, as far as I’m concerned, we are allowing INEC to do a loop,  anything short of the right thing is going to be resisted, except they want to succeed in setting Bayelsa on fire before they go back. If  not, let them do the right thing. It’s what we are expecting INEC to do. That is what the protest is all about.

“The result we saw on their portal, that is in Bassambiri where there was no PDP supporter, they have a result of forty something thousand, even in the governor’s LGA, APC scored 5,000 plus, PDP scored 18,000 plus and you are telling me in those places where all PDP members were chased out, you have results in that place?

“What we want is: let them show us the BVAS; the result must tally with what they got in the BVAS.  INEC should do that, they should not take that result, they should call for the BVAS. Again, it must be the BVAS, we have all the IDs of the BVAS, it must tally.”

Meanwhile INEC has officially announced results from six out of the eight local government areas in Bayelsa State.

The PDP Candidate, Governor Douye Diri is leading with 66,406.
