News Investigators/ The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has called for stronger collaboration between the military and the media to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Prof. Musa made the call while receiving the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) on a courtesy visit in Abuja.
This is contained in a statement by the association’s President and General Secretary, Sunday Odita and Umar Bologi, on Thursday in Abuja.
The minister said the media remained a critical partner in the fight against terrorism and other asymmetric threats, stressing that accurate and timely information was essential to national security.
“The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will maintain an open-door policy to foster cordial relations and ensure accurate information reaches Nigerians,” he said.
Mr Musa assured the association that the Ministry of Defence would consider its proposals and implement those considered feasible.
He urged defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional, saying responsible journalism was vital to sustaining public confidence in the Armed Forces.
Earlier, the President of DECAN, Mr Odita, congratulated Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as a recognition of his professionalism and distinguished military career.
Mr Odita reaffirmed DECAN’s commitment to responsible, balanced and factual reporting of defence and security issues while commending troops for their sacrifices in protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.
He appealed for regular media engagements and timely access to defence information, saying closer collaboration would boost public confidence in the Armed Forces and promote patriotism.
