News Investigators/ The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, Idiroko, has intercepted and seized 6,981 parcels and 62 sacks of marijuana in different locations of the state.
The Command’s Area Comptroller, Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this while handing over the drugs to Mr Olaniyi Ekundayo, Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Area Command, at Idiroko on Thursday.
Mr Afeni said “as part of our sustained enforcement operations to eliminate the influx of dangerous drugs into the country, the command is handing over a substantial amount of illicit items to the NDLEA.
“This handover underscores our unwavering synergy with sister agencies in the collective fight against illicit trade and preservation of national security and inter-agency collaboration in securing our borders.
“The command is also sending a clear message to criminal elements, both inside and outside, to desist from this nefarious acts and turn a new life.”
Receiving the seized drugs, Ekundayo lauded the strong synergy between NCS and NDLEA, urging the strengthening of relations to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
He said that every case handed over to the NDLEA was diligently investigated to its logical conclusion whenever sufficient leads are available.
“The last suspect arrested and handed over to us has led to the identification and addition of another suspect to the case.
“We are also actively tracking other individuals linked to the matter,” the commander said.
Ekundayo pointed out that the challenge of drug abuse and trafficking was not limited to any particular country, stressing that it remained a global problem requiring collective action.
He said that any meaningful progress could only be achieved through sustained collaboration among stakeholders and renewed commitment to the fight against illicit drugs.
