CURRENCY DEVALUATION: EFCC STORMS BUREAU DE CHANGE OFFICES IN ABUJA

••• MOVES AGAINST THOSE MOPPING THE DOLLAR

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, besieged Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, Centre to most bureau de change operators in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Network gathered that the raid was a covert operation to dislodge currency speculators who are alleged to be massively mopping up available foreign currencies.

According to investigation the raid was a week-long surveillance in which agents of the EFCC have been monitoring the activities of most of the Bureau de change operators in the Wuse 4, area.

It was gathered that the anti- graft agency was working on intelligence that some agents invaded the area with huge naira resources and were busy mopping up the available foreign currencies especially the United States Dollar.

The Network gathered that their main purpose was create artificial scarcity of dollars, after either hoarding or smuggling the same out of Nigeria.

According to our sources, operatives of the Commission have also been deployed to major international airports in the country, in what a source said is a coordinated nationwide operation that would be extended to all the major commercial cities such as Kano, Lagos and Port Harcourt and Kaduna States.

Recently, the Naira has been on a free fall in exchange to the Dollar at the parallel market at over N710 to a Dollar.

Attempt to reach at the Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, wasn’t successful as his lines were not available for comment.
