Cardoso Takes Over As Acting Governor of CBN

The new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Michael Cardoso, has officially taken over as the acting governor of the apex bank.

Cardoso was nominated for the position of the leadership of the apex bank following the travails of his predecessor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, who is facing prosecution.

The Director, Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin said in a statement on Friday that noted that the new Deputy-Governors-Designate have also assumed stepped into their positions in acting capacities.

He said that their appointments followed the resignations of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora who were Deputy Governors of the CBN.

The statement added that Cardoso and the four deputy governors of the bank took their oaths of office at a brief ceremony held at the CBN’s head office in Abuja.

Cardoso and his team are expected to address the disturbingly depreciating value of the nation’s currency, the Naira.

Cardoso was  Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget when Tinubu was Governor of Lagos State.

Cardoso  was a highly reputable banker, chartered stockbroker and public policy maker. 

Cardoso holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Managerial and Administrative Studies from Aston University, Birmingham, England.

He also has a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, the United States.

Cardoso was chairman of the board of Citibank Nigeria.
