News Investigators/ The International Education group at Cambridge University Press and Assessment has recognised 156 Nigerians for exceptional performance in the 2025 Cambridge examination series.
The organisation recognised the Nigerians in partnership with the British Council.
The recognition was in Lagos on Friday night.
The outstanding Nigerians are from 47 schools across Nigeria and included 16 best students in the examination, globally.
The 16 learners received the prestigious Top in the World Award for attaining the highest standard.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students were honoured at the British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards ceremony.
The event took place at the Civic Centre on Victoria Island.
The students excelled in Cambridge IGCSE O-Level and Cambridge International AS & A-Level examinations.
They excelled across 44 subjects in the June and November 2025 examination series.
Cambridge and British Council also recognised learners across more than 40 countries who achieved exceptional results in the examinations.
The ceremony also featured 77 Top in Nigeria awards, 56 High Achievement awards, and seven Best Across awards.
The Regional Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, International Education at Cambridge, Mr Juan Visser, said that British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards had continued to celebrate exceptional learners whose academic excellence distinguished on the global stage.
Visser commended the students for remarkable accomplishments, noting that the awards were established to formally recognise their exceptional achievements.
“We are proud of these learners whose outstanding results reflect dedication, resilience and excellence, demonstrating how quality education equips young people with confidence for future success,” he said.
Visser said the awards reflected Cambridge’s commitment to recognising academic achievement and supporting schools in promoting excellence within their communities.
According to him, Cambridge qualifications have continued to provide learners with pathways to higher education opportunities both in Nigeria and internationally.
In her remarks, the British Council Nigeria Country Director, Mrs Donna McGowan, said that academic achievements, rigours and outcomes were very important.
She congratulated the award recipients and commended the contributions of their teachers, parents and schools.
McGowan said, “Today, we celebrate exceptional achievements, resilience and ambition, recognising learners whose success reflects strong support from educators, parents and school leaders shaping future leaders.
“These awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of students across our British Council Partnerships Network, recognising exceptional performances in Cambridge IGCSE, O-Level and A-Level examinations, including Top in the World and Top in Nigeria honours.”
The Director of Examinations at the British Council Nigeria, Mr Eyitayo Akanji, said that excellence would be achieved through adequate preparation, sustained support and collaboration among school leaders, teachers and students.
Akanji noted that the awardees sat for Cambridge International examinations along with about one million other candidates worldwide.
He said that the success of the 156 students demonstrated that Nigerian students could compete successfully and excel globally.
“Our schools continue to nurture world-class scholars whose excellence earns international recognition and respect,” he added.
Miss Ifeoluwa Onafowokan of Greensprings School, Anthony Village, Lagos, who emerged Top in Nigeria in Business Studies, dedicated her award to her teachers and parents for support.
“I am grateful to my teachers and parents.
“Their guidance and encouragement helped me to excel in Business Studies and achieve this recognition,” Onafowokan said.
Miss Memunat Salako, also of Greenspring Schools, who was recognised for outstanding performance in Biology and Chemistry, expressed gratitude to God and her teachers.
“I am excited and I am grateful to God for this achievement.
“My study routine focused on revisions, making personal notes and reviewing past question papers.
“Supportive teachers made learning easier,” she said.
