News Investigator/ Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has inaugurated a 12-member steering committee for the state’s 100-megawatt (MW) solar energy development project.
Mr Bago inaugurated the committee on Monday in Minna, with the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, as its chairman.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the solar power project is to be funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
NAN also reports that the committee is saddled with the responsibility of monitoring and coordinating relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in addressing institutional bottlenecks and ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
Mr Bago described the project as a source of pride for the state, saying it would be the first sub-national off-grid solar power plant of its kind.
He urged members of the committee to work diligently toward achieving the objectives of the project and assured them of his administration’s support.
In his remarks, Mr Usman said the state had successfully met the necessary requirements for the project at both the international and national levels.
He said the facility, which would be located in Maikunkele, Bosso Local Government Area, would generate 100MW of renewable energy.
The SSG said the project would contribute significantly to improving access to reliable and sustainable electricity in the state.
He assured that the committee members would work tirelessly to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
