ASUU STRIKE:  FG MAKES U-TURN ON DIRECTIVE TO VCs TO REOPEN VARSITIES

The Federal Government on Monday withdrawn a circular, it earlier released ordering the Vice-Chancellors, pro-chancellors, and governing councils to re-open federal universities

The letter from the NUC had directed Vice Chancellors to immediately re-open all public Universities and allow students to go back to classes.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof Abubakar Rasheed, gave the directive in a letter approved by the Commission and addressed to all vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.

The Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, signed the letter on behalf of the Commission asking the Vice Chancellors to ensure that the striking lecturers immediately resumed lectures.

However, in another circular, marked NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/136, and was also signed by Onazi, the commission withdrew the order without giving an explanation.

The letter titled, “Withdrawal of Circular NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 Dated September 23, 2022” partly read, “I have been directed to withdraw the NUC Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, and dated September 23, 2022 on the above subject.

“Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn. All pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities, are to please note. Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.

“Please accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary’s warmest regards”
