APC Candidate Wins Councillorship By-election In Nasarawa State

News Investigators/ Adi Ibrahim-Idasho of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the councillorship by-election in Obi Electoral Ward of Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Mr Ibrahim-Idasho polled 8,573 votes to defeat his opponent, Adi Yusuf-Ismaila of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who scored 177 votes.

The by-election, conducted on Saturday, was held to fill the vacant councillorship seat following the death of the former councillor, Hussaini Idasho-Adi.

Declaring the result, Adudu Mohamed-Mohammed, Returning Officer for the election, said Ibrahim-Idasho scored the highest number of votes cast and satisfied the requirements of the law.

“I hereby declare that Mr Adi Ibrahim-Idasho of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared winner and returned elected,” he said.

Also speaking, Ayuba Wandai, Chairman of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), commended the electorate for the peaceful conduct of the election.

Mr Wandai said the bye-election was the first council election conducted by the commission under the Electoral Act, as amended, following the recent Supreme Court judgment.

He explained that the Nasarawa State Electoral Law 2018 empowered the chairman of the commission to serve as the Chief Returning Officer and declare results of council elections.

“But as you can see today, the result was declared here in Obi LGA by a Returning Officer who is not even a staff of the commission,” he said.

The NASIEC chairman commended the security agencies and other stakeholders for their roles in ensuring the peaceful conduct of the election.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in the state.

Reacting to the result, Mr Ibrahim-Idasho expressed satisfaction with his victory and thanked the electorate for the confidence reposed in him.

The councillor-elect pledged to provide quality representation to the people of the ward and work for the success of all APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
