By Kamsi Anayo, Awka

The Anambra Vigilance Group, on Wednesday invaded Oba town, in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra state.

The Network gathered that the group came into the community and attempted to abduct the chairman of Oba Youth association.

It was learnt that the group fired some shots as the chairman and some community youths resisted them.

It was learnt that the youth leader whose name was not mentioned called out his Oba country men who attacked the members of the vigilance group.

A source who confided in the Network said that apart from beating up the members of the group, the Oba youths also destroyed the patrol vehicle and took them to the king’s place.

A youth from the area who gave his name as Igwe Chinonso confirmed to our correspondent that those who were attacked were men of the Anambra Vigilance Group (AVG).

A video of the attack, also showed the damaged vehicles as bearing the inscription AVG.

Chinonso dismissed insinuations in some quarters that those who invaded Oba Community were member of the Ebubeagu security outfit from the neighboring Imo State.

Chinonso said: “You know all those areas that have border with Imo state, they refer to every government sponsored security group as Ebubeagu.”

Anambra State Police Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, described what happened as a misunderstanding between Oba youths and the vigilante operatives.

Ikenga said: “It was just a misunderstanding between vigilante operatives and Oba youths, who felt that the vigilante men attacked their chairman.

“As I speak to you, the DPO of that area is there, and he is making sure that there is peace and order. We have been able to calm the situation down,” he said.”
