News Investigators/ The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Friday welcomed INEC’s announcement of 20 Feb. 20, 2027 for presidential and National Assembly elections.
In a statement in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged INEC to assure Nigerians on real-time electronic transmission of results.
He said poll credibility would depend not only on the timetable but on transparent processes throughout the electoral cycle.
Mr Abdullahi also called on the National Assembly to pass a binding legal framework removing ambiguity around real-time electronic transmission.
“We welcome the early release of the timetable, which provides political parties, stakeholders and the electorate with clarity for long-term planning.
“However, the credibility of the 2027 general elections will not be judged by timeliness alone, but by demonstrable commitment to transparency and due process.
“Of particular importance is real-time electronic transmission of results.
“While the Commission says it will operate within the law, the current Electoral Act leaves discretion in critical areas affecting public confidence,” he said.
He recalled that the INEC Chairman had acknowledged the commission’s technological capacity for electronic transmission and pledged continued use of technology.
The party urged INEC to provide early and unambiguous clarity on its readiness to adopt real-time transmission if legal amendments are enacted.
“Beyond this, the commission should outline manual and electronic guardrails to safeguard results management and prevent irregularities seen in recent off-cycle elections.
“Nigerians have shown they are ready to defend the sanctity of their votes.
“What is required is for the electoral umpire to match civic vigilance with institutional clarity, operational transparency and administrative excellence,” he said.
Mr Abdullahi said the party remained committed to democratic deepening and credible elections.
He added that ADC would continue constructive engagement with INEC, the National Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure the 2027 polls reflect the will of Nigerians.
