AMUAHIA/By Jackson Udeani – Less than 24 hours after his emergence as Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Kennedy Njoku, has resigned his appointment to pave way for the election of Chikwendu Kalu as new speaker.

Mr. Kalu, a lawyer turned politician representing Isiala Ngwa south constituency was elected following the resignation of Mr. Njoku in a curious circumstance Friday.

Twenty out of the 24member House had on Thursday impeached Martins Azubuike its speaker since 2015 when it wasinaugurated, accusing him of gross financial misconduct and failure to “carry members along in the running of the affairs of the House”.

But in a sudden twist, Mr. Njoku announced his resignation at the resumption of plenary on Friday, thanking his colleagues for their confidence in him.

Following his resignation the Clerk of the House, John-Pedro Irokansi, immediately called for an election to be conducted to fill the vacuum created by Njoku’s resignation.

Consequently, Chukwudi Apugo, member representing Umuahia east constituency, nominated Mr. Kalu, in a motion seconded by Ifeanyi Uchendu, representing Ohafia south constituency.

He was elected through a voice vote by the 24 members without no dissenting voice.
