UPDATE: Five UN Boundary Officials Killed In Nigeria-Cameroon Border

By Tom Garba, Yola – Suspected bandits in Komcha village of the Republic of Cameroon  killed five officials of the International Boundary Committee set up by the United Nations on a delineation mission of the border towns between Nigeria  and Cameroon .

The village is on the border with Toungo, Nigeria side, located in southern part of Adamawa State, with a thick forest in between the two communities.

The officials were said to be on a mission to demarcate the boundaries between Nigeria and Cameroon in accordance with the International Court of Justice’s verdict delivered during former President Olusegun Obasanjo era which ceded Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that while the officials  were on their mission, they were attacked by bandits at Komcha Village in the Republic of Cameroun

The reports revealed the identity of some of the victims of the attack to include, a Kenyan ,Cameroonian, and Nigerians officials from Adamawa, Jigawa and ,Kano states.

Briefing  journalists at Government  House, Yola, Adamawa capital,  on Wednesday, Adamawa State Commissioner for Justice, Silas Sanga who confirmed the incidence said that the the remains of the officials have been conveyed to the state preparatory to transporting them to their states and countries of origin.

However, Mr. Sanga did not disclose the full identity of members of the Committees on boundary delineation that fell victims of the attack.

Reports further said that the officials were in the area to study the boundary issue between Nigeria and Cameroon when they attacked by the armed bandits.

One other report alleged that the officials were attacked by Cameroonian gendarmes at Koncha, a border town between Cameroon and Toungo Local Government area of Adamawa State.

Already, a delegation of Adamawa State Government headed by the deputy governor, Martins Babale are putting finishing touches on how to sent the the remains of the victims to their respective countries.

The delegation which includes Adamawa Commissioner for Land and Survey, Ibrahim Mijinyawa and some top ministry officials have been mobilized at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola to receive the corpses.
