Not fewer than 54 Nigerian soldiers have been sentenced to death by firing squad for mutiny, act of cowardice and refusal to fight members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.Nigerian Army

The convictions of the soldiers bring to 66 now the number of soldiers on the death row.

The convicted soldiers were among those standing trial following their arraignment by the military authorities over allegations bothering on dereliction of duty in their northeast post where they were assigned to combat the Boko Haram insurgents.

The 54 soldiers were sentenced to death on Wednesday by the Nigeria Army, but subject to final ratification of the Commander In Chief.

However, five other soldiers were acquitted and let off the hook by the authorities.

In September, 12 soldiers were sentenced to death by firing squad for mutiny and attempted murder on their commanding officer in Maiduguri.
