By Sadiq Umar – The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has summoned an emergency meeting of the National Assembly leadership.

The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon is expected to have in attendance principal officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Bankole Omisore confirmed the meeting in a tweet.

“NASS leadership will tomorrow meet at noon to consider some national issues. The National Assembly leadership comprises both @NGRSenate and @HouseNGR,” Mr. Omisore tweeted.

“It will be followed by another meeting with the leadership of @inecnigeria led by its chairman, Prof Mahmud Yakubu,” he added.

The meeting is coming 12 days after the Senate and the House of Representatives proceeded on annual recess, having adjourned till September 25.

It is not clear whether the rumoured plot to unseat Mr. Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu was part of the reasons for the meeting.

The media has reported plots by the All Progressive Congress (APC) backed government to reconvene the senate in particular, in a bid to unseat the senate president.

Some pro-Buhari senators, including Abdullahi Adamu had called on Mr. Saraki to resign from his position or be impeached following the defection of 14 senators from the ruling APC to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
