No fewer than 5 persons including a bride and groom billed to wed on Saturday 5th September 2014 in Enugu were Friday night shot dead by rampaging heavily armed gunmen.

The late intending couple, our Correspondent gathered, was to perform their weeding at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Trans Ekulu, Enugu.

Confirming this in Enugu, the state police public Relations officer PPRO, Ebere Amarizu, said the gunmen who robbed Genuine Petrol Station in the Trans Ekulu area of the city, killed the Manager of the fuel station.

The groom, identified as Uzochukwu Eze, in company of his bride (names with held) met their untimely death when they stopped to buy fuel on their way to drop a woman who brought a gift to them ahead of the ceremony.

Our correspondent further learnt that the woman who was seated in front of the car with the groom was also shot dead by the trigger-happy robbers.

However, as the robbers were escaping through NOWAS/ Nike Lake Road, they also shot and killed a police orderly attached to the wife of the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The police orderly was said to have alighted from the vehicle to help ease traffic jam, which was building up at the Timber Market end of the road when the hoodlums disarmed and rained bullets on him.

Amaraizu said: “Robbers were not really on the rampage, but there was an incident, which allegedly brought about the death of some people by suspected hoodlums who shot sporadically before the arrival of security operatives.”

According to him, the police are working tirelessly with a view to ensuring that the robbers are apprehended.
