The Sunday morning jail break by detained Boko Haram members has resulted in the death of 20 sect members and 1 service men with 3 other men severely stabbed by the escaping suspects at the State Security Service headquarters in Abuja.

Trouble started when a suspected member of the Boko Haram sect in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), at its headquarters in Abuja, attacked and over power his service handler and and shot him dead with his riffle.

The suspect Newsinvestigators gathered then started releasing other detainees from their cells in a desperate attempt to escape.

A statement by DSS spokesperson Marilyn Ogar, said the suspect attempted to disarm an officer after hitting on the head with his hand-cuff in a bid to escape, but attracted the attention of other guards on duty.

According to her: “At 0715 hours, the Service suspect handler went to the detention facility within the Headquarters to feed the suspects. One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff. His attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others.

“The gun shots attracted the attention of the military with whom we have an understanding of mutual assistance in the event of any threat. The Army immediately deployed a team to reinforce our perimeter guards to forestall any external collaborators. The situation has since been brought under control.”

Sources told Newsinvestigators that “the suspect was not properly chained, and was able to pushed down the operative and quickly dispossessed him of his rifle and shot him. He quickly released his co-inmates who started escaping with some scaling the fence,” the source said.

The source further said that the DSS always treat suspects in their custody with decency and even provide them three square meal. They make available toiletries so that they can bath and look good.”

However, the service man on Sunday duty was taken by surprise by the suspect who he had related with so well before in his official capacity, only to have been caught off guard.

“At the end of the confrontation that followed, 20 Boko Haram suspect were felled but 3 service men were stabbed with knife by sect members,” the source added.
